Artistic environments and their influence on the development of key competencies in primary education. Artseduca revista electrónica de educación en las artes 39:299-315.

Abstract

Objective: In an increasingly globalized and diverse world, education focuses on developing key competencies beyond traditional academic knowledge. This study investigates the self-perception of the European Union’s key competencies in 5th and 6th-grade primary school students, the correlations among them, and how artistic environments influence these students’ competency self-perception and attitudes towards learning.

Methods: Using a quantitative, non-experimental, and correlational approach, the relationship between the self-perception of key competencies and participation in artistic activities was analyzed. Data were collected from 993 students through validated questionnaires.

Results: The data revealed that participation in artistic activities significantly correlates with higher self-perception of educational competencies. The results suggest that competencies in Linguistic Communication, Information Processing and Digital Competence, and Cultural and Artistic Competence are particularly influenced by artistic environments.

Conclusion: This study contributes to understanding how artistic settings can enhance competency perception and attitudes towards learning, and suggests significant implications for formulating educational policies that promote a more holistic and creative approach to teaching and learning.
